First Look

A private moment for the couple to see each other before the ceremony

✦ Full Definition

What Is a First Look?

A 'First Look' is a planned private moment — photographed by the wedding photographer — where the couple sees each other for the first time on their wedding day before the ceremony begins. Traditionally, the groom/partner didn't see the bride before the ceremony (believed to bring good luck). The First Look deliberately breaks this tradition to create a private, emotionally intimate moment and enable a more relaxed pre-ceremony photo session. First Looks are typically staged in a private location with the photographer positioned to capture both partners' reactions.

The First Look in Modern Weddings

First Looks have become increasingly popular because they allow: (1) a private emotional moment away from a crowd, (2) a full set of couple portraits before the ceremony while hair, makeup, and flowers are fresh, and (3) more relaxed family and wedding party portraits since the couple isn't anxious about 'not seeing each other.' Many couples report the First Look as one of their favorite wedding day moments.
