The ceremonial spread laid at the heart of a Persian wedding ceremony

✦ Full Definition

What Is a Sofreh Aghd?

The Sofreh Aghd (سفره‌ی عقد) is the sacred ceremonial spread that forms the centerpiece of a traditional Iranian/Persian wedding ceremony. The word 'sofreh' means spread or tablecloth, and 'aghd' means marriage contract. Laid on the floor or a special table, it faces east toward sunrise and is elaborately decorated with symbolic items, each carrying deep meaning about prosperity, fertility, health, and the journey of marriage. A Sofreh Aghd may include a mirror (Ayaneh) to reflect light and the future, candelabras (Shamdoon), a holy book (Quran, Torah, or other sacred text), gold coins for prosperity, decorated eggs for fertility, pomegranates and honey for sweetness, herbs and spices for health, and a beautiful hand-woven cloth.

The Sofreh Aghd in Modern Weddings

The Sofreh Aghd is one of the most visually stunning elements of a Persian wedding and a beloved family heirloom — many families use or incorporate items from their mothers' and grandmothers' spreads. In Iranian diaspora weddings around the world, the Sofreh Aghd is often the primary visual and cultural focal point, even when the broader celebration blends Persian and Western traditions.
