The seated wedding ceremony portion in Persian tradition

✦ Full Definition

What Is a Jalseh?

Jalseh (جلسه) literally means 'sitting' or 'session' in Persian. In the context of a Persian wedding, it refers specifically to the ceremonial seated portion of the wedding where the couple takes their place before the Sofreh Aghd and the formal Aghd ceremony is conducted. The term is sometimes used colloquially to refer to the entire ceremony component of a Persian wedding, as distinct from the reception (Jashn) portion.

✦ In Context

The Jalseh in Modern Weddings

In modern Persian-American weddings, the Jalseh is typically scheduled before the main reception. Guests are seated in a ceremony arrangement facing the Sofreh Aghd, and the intimacy of the seated ceremony — with its meaningful rituals — creates an emotionally powerful opening to the celebration.
