What Is a Wedding Registry?

A wedding registry is a list of desired gifts that a couple creates at one or more retailers, allowing guests to choose and purchase items the couple has specifically selected. Traditional registries focus on household items (dishes, linens, kitchen appliances), but modern registries have expanded dramatically to include: experiences (honeymoon funds, cooking classes, concert tickets), charitable donations, custom merchandise, cash funds for a down payment or renovation, and items from specialty retailers outside traditional department stores. Most couples create registries at 2–3 locations to offer guests different price points and accessibility.

The Wedding Registry in Modern Weddings

Etiquette recommends registering for at least 1.5 times your expected guest count in items (to ensure everyone can find something at their price point). Include a range of price points from $25 to $500+. Registry information should not appear on the formal wedding invitation — share via the wedding website URL on Save the Dates and through word of mouth. Post registry links on your wedding website prominently.
