A plan designating where each guest will sit at the reception
What Is a Seating Chart?
A seating chart is a visual or written plan that assigns each wedding guest to a specific table (and sometimes a specific seat) at the reception. Seating charts are considered hospitality essentials at formal and semi-formal receptions — they prevent the social chaos of open seating for large guest counts, help with special dietary arrangements, and allow the couple to thoughtfully consider relationship dynamics and seat people where they'll be most comfortable and joyful. Most seating charts are displayed near the reception entrance on a large printed or handwritten display — organized alphabetically by guest last name, not by table number.
The Seating Chart in Modern Weddings
Seating charts are often described as the single most stressful logistical task in wedding planning, primarily because they require completion only after all RSVPs are in (typically 2–4 weeks before the wedding). Modern tools like AllSeated, Perfect Table Plan, and wedding website seating tools significantly ease the process. Leave a few empty 'buffer' seats at your own table and at parents' tables for inevitable last-minute changes.
